The Microsoft .NET Framework installs the .NET Framework runtime and associated files required to run applications developed to target the .NET Framework. The .NET Framework improves scalability and performance of applications with improved caching, application deployment and updating with ClickOnce, support for the broadest array of browsers and devices with ASP.NET controls and services.

The Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 (formerly known as WinFX), is the new managed code programming model for Windows. It combines the power of the .NET Framework 2.0 with new technologies for building applications that have visually compelling user experiences, seamless communication across technology boundaries, and the ability to support a wide range of business processes. These new technologies are Windows Presentation Foundation, Windows Communication Foundation, Windows Workflow Foundation, and Windows CardSpace (formerly code named "Infocard").

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 is installed by default on Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. At the same time, Microsoft will make .NET Framework available for Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1.
